Keeping rural shows alive

August 3rd, 2009 — 9:04am

Once again Sykehouse’s 124th country show proved that we all enjoy celebrating all things rural as a way to going back to our roots and keeping the community spirit alive.

The Show that tooks place yesterday in one of Sykehouse’s farmer field was just great fun and we all seemed to enjoy it. We even had a sunny day which made all the difference! Some of the area’s finest livestock were on display including my favourite: Suffolk Ram. A young boy was delighted to win the agricultural horse category meanwhile the showjumping  provided an action packed equestrian timetable for spectators. The rounding up of geese and sheep were also great fun and the teamwork that goes on between the farmer and the sheepdog to get the animals penned in quite inspiring. The shinny vintage agricultural machinery display was also a treat for all nostalgic farmers and enthusiasts alike.

Food remained at the heart of the Show and once again local growers had very appetizing vegetables on display; some of the onions and leeks’ sizes defied all laws of gravity… and of course they are all organically grow. Why do we need genetically modified produces I wonder?!? There were also lots of crafts on display with some lovely Alpaca knits, freshly baked produced, hand made cards to name but a few!
